Constipation Support for Parents of Babies and Children.
Constipation can occur occasionally or frequently depending on your Child. Certain conditions or disorders can make constipation worse. We provide treatment and preventative methods to improve your Child's Symptoms.
Supportive Care Measures:
Diet: Including adequate liquid intake as well as foods including fiber. Adequate fluid intake depends on age. Once baby is over the age of 1 and solid foods have been fully incorporated adequate fluid intake becomes about 2-4 cups per day. Prior to age 1 refer to Our Milk Needs Based on Age Post.
Helpful Fluids and Foods that can Reduce Constipation:
Increase Apple Juice or Prune Juice Intake (Cut with water)
Applesauce
Pears
Prunes
Any Fruit they ENJOY!
Windi: Sometimes trapped gas can mimic constipation. Before utilizing more serious methods try removing trapped gas. This is a more common cause in young children within the first year of life.
Movement: This ranges depending on your Child's age.
If your Child has not been Potty trained, place them on their back and move their legs up and down in a bicycle motion. If your child is Potty trained have them jump around or swim in the tub. A warm bath is always a good way to get your child to relax.
Abdominal Massage: Moving your hands around your Child's Abdomen from lower right, up and over the top of the abdomen and down on the left will help with relaxation of muscles.
Medications: There are 3 different medication types used to treat constipation. Oral, rectal Suppository, and an Enema. Below are the most commonly Recommended.
Miralax : Oral suspension that can be mixed in just about anything.
Suppository: Medication given per the rectum through applicator.
Enema: Liquid given per the rectum for severe constipation.
